HB 54 Makes LA Wallet Equivalent to Physical Credential

Being one of the younger legislators, I realized just how crucial our digital devices are to each of us in our everyday lives.
— Rep. Ted James, Baton Rouge
As of December 22, 2020, businesses in Louisiana• may not refuse to accept LA Wallet for age-restricted purchases or identification purposes. While LA Wallet has always offered Louisiana residents a legal, digital identification credential, HB54 makes LA Wallet an equivalent credential to a physical license or ID.
Louisiana Representative Ted James of Baton Rouge authored HB54 and presented the new law in October 2020. Representative James is also responsible for the law that made a digital credential available to Louisiana residents, making it the first of its kind in the United States.
The newest accomplishment for Louisiana provides LA Wallet users with more chances to utilize their digital credentials than ever before. Before HB54, businesses in Louisiana were given the option to accept LA Wallet as a legal form of identification. Now, LA Wallet digital credentials are equivalent to a physical license or ID.
